ANU College of Business and Economics' (CBE's) Research School of Finance, Actuarial Studies and Statistics (RSFAS) experts Dr Yanrong Yang, Dr Francis Hui and Professor Alan Welsh have been awarded funding through the Australian Research Council’s (ARC) prestigious Discovery Projects 2023 Scheme. Their projects were two of only seven funded across Australia in statistics.
Dr Yanrong Yang received A$353,000 for her project ‘Feature learning for high-dimensional functional time series’. The funding will allow Yanrong to develop new statistical theories and methods for analysing high-dimensional functional time series. These tools will have widespread empirical applications, informing advanced manufacturing processes and improving forecasting for mortality data in demography, climate data in environmental science, asset returns in finance and electricity consumption in economics.
Dr Francis Hui and Professor Alan Welsh received A$388,000 for their project, ‘Reliable and accurate statistical solutions for modern, complex data’. Francis and Alan will use the grant to develop novel methods for reliable and accurate statistical modelling of modern, complex correlated and error-prone data sets. These methods will be invaluable in a range of contexts from protecting endangered marine species to better understanding the relationship between education achievement and financial success.
Associate Professor Steve Sault, Director of RSFAS, congratulates the recipients on their achievement.
“This is a fantastic outcome for Alan, Francis and Yanrong and highlights the excellent research they are doing within RSFAS. I congratulate them on receiving this ARC funding and look forward to seeing the outcomes from their respective research projects,” he says.
The College is always keen to explore research collaborations with the public and private sector and to reconnect with alumni. Please get in touch if you would like to know more about partnering with us.
